Product Review: Spam Bully Software

What It Is

SpamBully is a Bayesian-based email filter that integrates with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express to reduce and virtually eliminate spam email from your inbox. A bayesian filter is a fancy name for software that "learns". Essentially the software evaluates each email you receive, giving it a score based on past experiences with similar messages. So instead of simply filtering out unwanted email messages based on certain words or phrases, Spam Bully actually looks at the content in each message and defines patterns that indicate spam. This is much more effective than simply filtering out bad email addresses or relegating messages with certain words to the trash.

How It Works

Spam Bully is very easy to use. When you install it, it places a Spam Bully toolbar at the top of your Outlook or Outlook Express screen that allows you to train the program to filter your spam effectively. See a message that slipped by? Simply select the message and press the SPAM button in the toolbar. The offending message will be moved out of your inbox to a special spam folder and Spam Bully will learn to filter similar messages to the spam folder in the future.

What about false positives? Does Spam Bully filter legitimate messages to the Spam folder? The short answer is yes, from time to time, Spam Bully will come across a message that it thinks is spam that may be from a legitimate source. However, the good news is that very few messages will be misdirected to the spam folder.

Spam Bully reduces the number of false positives by utilizing a special Unsure folder to file messages that it's unsure about. When you first begin using Spam Bully we recommend that you check your Unsure folder at least once a day and use the Not Spam button on the toolbar to direct legitimate messages back to your inbox. You can also direct spam messages that end up in the Unsure folder directly to the Spam folder so Spam Bully learns that these messages are spam and filters them properly when it encounters similar messages in the future.

You'll also want to check your spam folder at least once per day to make sure legitimate messages have not been filtered there. As Spam Bully learns, less false positives will occur and we've found that Spam Bully is quite accurate right out of the gate and learns very quickly.
