LinkedIn and other social and business networking websites have found their place in our society. We have seen an explosive and exponential growth of many social networks. In the beginning most people were very skeptical about them, but now they are not only here to stay, but they offer opportunities we never had before. The challenge from a business stand point is how do you use them to make sales, improve relationship, increase brand and provide information. And how is this different from what your website is doing?

In any networking, chamber events, trade shows or online social media you need to have a goal. I know, most people go to the event, seek out either their friends (so they don't feel social vulnerable) or they are hard core selling to the people they meet. Many people don't have a goal. So you leave the event and say, "that was a waste of time."

LinkedIn is no different. You need a goal.

So here are my personal goals for LinkedIn, maybe this will help you.

  1. Personal Branding
  2. Industry credibility enhancer
  3. Build relationships
  4. Attain new clients
  5. Develop marketing partnerships

So how do I think I can achieve these goals? It comes from understanding that the power of linkedIn comes not only from your network but from the network of your contacts. Imagine if you could see your business associates customer/associates private database. What would you do with it? Would you want to have this? Well, In LinkedIn you can view the contact list of the people in your network.

The steps to achieving my goals are:

  1. Develop a first level network of over 1000 contacts
  2. Be recommended by 50 people
  3. Participate in linkedIn Groups
  4. Get introductions to my friends contacts
